Acting Promptly

Cancers of the mouth and face are now as common as more widely recognised types, such as cervical cancer. They can develop in different forms, with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) being the most common.

SCC is often found in the lining of the mouth, the lips, and increasingly, the tongue. More rarely, cancers can develop in the salivary glands, lymph nodes, bones, muscles, and other tissues.

Like any area of skin exposed to the sun, the face is also at risk of various conditions. These can range from actinic keratosis (a pre-cancerous skin condition) to more serious forms, such as melanoma.

Early detection makes all the difference. The survival rate for stage one melanoma is now close to 100%, but this drops to below 20% at stage four. The same principle applies to many other cancers.

The best chance of successful treatment for oral and facial cancers is getting an accurate diagnosis from a specialist as early as possible.
