An Innate Predisposition

Evolutionary changes over the course of time including adjustments in diet and ways of eating have seen progressive changes to the human jaw.

Our teeth have not followed suit, and our jaws have become less muscular. This has developed a predisposition for a range of jaw disorders.

Jaw dislocations are quite common, especially in sport, or due to a fall. The ball of the jaw joint dislodges from the temporal bone socket. However this can be manipulated or surgically assisted back into place.

Related areas can suffer, such as the articular disc, which can become displaced, or deteriorate. Bone and tissue across the jaw region are also subject to a range of diseases, or trauma.

Accurate diagnosis is the key to successful treatment. This is a combination of digital imaging, tissue, or blood analysis and a maxillofacial consultant’s experience, to identify a range of jaw disorders.
