Individual Decisions

Orthognathic surgery is often a choice, which may offer personal and psychological benefit but not be a medical necessity. There are still exceptions and looking at related research could help.

From information in a cross section of studies, our general principle of non necessity seems rational, although by no means universal.

People may be unhappy with the shape of their face, yet this is also causing practical, or health issues. They could range from speech restriction, to teeth becoming worn.

There is a need to accept that every case is unique and individual diagnosis is the key. Medical requirements can apply and be the core reason for proceeding, or part of the equation.

Sleep apnoea is an example where orthognathic surgery can assist. This does not mean the operation would help everyone with the condition, or those seeking orthognathic surgery all have airway problems.
