Approach To Treatment
Treatment starts with insightful diagnosis, through the skills of specialists and by listening to patients of all ages, or those supporting them.
Care should be taken when imaging younger patients but this is worthwhile. The best equipment will make a difference to risk levels and sound understanding of their facial anatomy assists in diagnosis, or treatment planning.
A child’s teeth can be unerupted or impacted, ankylosis is not uncommon, where teeth fuse to the alveolar bone. Any irregularities in the jaw area will be analysed, for the effect on tooth placement, or wider health.
Ankylosis can be linked to infection, which is common in children. Identifying paediatric infection is essential, often within the jaw, which is more porous than in adults.
A young person’s jaw may also harbour unseen adult teeth, perhaps wisdom teeth in adolescents. Understanding the way they are likely to progress is key to treatment, tooth development rates change as we grow.
There may be supernumerary teeth, or an absence of teeth, neither are unusual in childhood. Management of impacted, or unexposed teeth can call for interdisciplinary care, between an orthodontist and maxillofacial surgeon.
Preventing ongoing issues is a core need, such as cyst growth, or reabsorption of tooth roots into the jaw. Part of ensuring good dental and facial development, which is a priority for young patients.
Care At Our Harley Street Clinic
A fine smile from our orthodontists may be your aim, although wider skills are provided in house, to meet normal, or complex dental needs.
Children benefit from having diagnosis and treatment in an environment they have come to trust. Our paediatric maxillofacial consultants help to ensure this is the case, in a practice built on dedication.
The same level of knowledge and standard of care are provided for facial reconstruction, orthodontics, oral surgery, or a smaller dental need.
They are all important to our patients and their families. The staff at our London clinic recognise that whilst care matters at any age, a child has their life ahead of them.
