Professor Shakib is one of the leading Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons in the UK. Working in a field covering specialist treatment of facial and cranial areas, for function and appearance.
A personal area of medicine, where Professor Shakib’s ability to build relationships with patients is invaluable. As is his extensive experience in maxillofacial surgery, for those he treats and to add knowledge to his profession.
Professor Shakib’s own studies began with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree in 1993. In 1996, he was awarded a Dental Surgery Fellowship, at the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow.
His fellowship continued at the Royal College of Surgeons in England, followed by studying pre-clinical medicine, at the Royal Free Hospital.
In 1998, he was selected for the prestigious PhD program at UCL. Becoming a Doctor of Philosophy in Molecular Medicine in 2002, a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery with Distinction in 2003.
Professor Shakib was awarded membership of The Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2006 and a Specialist Fellowship in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. He was admitted to the GMC’s Specialist Register for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in 2011.
Throughout his career, ensuring patients are well served has been his focus. This includes treating people requiring implants, bone augmentation, glandular care and micro-vascular surgery.
Advanced treatment has been a key part of Professor Shakib’s work. From skin cancer surgery, to life changing support for patients with facial, or jaw deformity, or in need of facial reconstruction.
As an oral & maxillofacial surgeon, Professor Shakib has few peers. Being asked to share his knowledge within the medical profession is a natural result but using his skills to help people will always be Professor Shakib’s first wish.
Research & Teaching
Professor Shakib is an internationally respected researcher and mentor, helping to take his critical field of medicine forward.
Involvement in research over two decades has seen him receive a number of scientific awards. They include twice winning the Paul Toller Research Prize, from the British Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons.
Sharing knowledge and supporting colleagues across the globe is important to him. He is a teacher for trainee specialists, a presenter at medical conferences and has published a number of papers in scientific journals.
Professor Shakib has served as an examiner for the RCS since 2010 and acted as editor for BAOMS, his profession’s primary association.
