A consultant oral, maxillofacial and plastic surgeon, Mr Coombes is internationally recognised for the reconstructive and aesthetic surgery he carries out. Always with his patient’s interests at the heart of decision making and clear communication.
Mr Coombes qualified in dentistry at King’s College London in 1993, returning to the same prestigious institution to qualify in medicine, in 2000. The dual qualification a key part of becoming a maxillofacial surgeon.
Specialist training followed at UK centres, in oral and plastic surgery. In 2007, he was admitted to the GMC’s Specialist Register for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
In 2008, Mr Coombes was appointed to the role of consultant at the Queen Victoria Hospital, where he had trained. Quickly developing a reputation for exceptional reconstructive surgery, nationally and internationally.
His work in Malta was recognised by him being awarded a Knighthood of the Order of St John. This came for successfully performing ground breaking operations, which other surgeons had declined to take on.
From their first inquiry, to consultation, treatment, or after care, every patient is treated with respect and honesty. Patient safety and wellbeing are paramount to Mr Coombes, led by building effective relationships.
This includes a realistic assessment but not creating barriers to patients wishes, or needs. Mr Coombes intent is always to implement the best available options, to ensure high quality care and good outcomes.
A thought which applies to Mr Coombes aesthetic surgery, such as rhinoplasty, or the Apex facelift and to complex facial surgery to meet medical needs. In each case, the finest reconstructive techniques will help.
Research & Teaching
Mr Coombes continues to lecture and train next generation surgeons, particularly on specialist areas, such as rhinoplasty, or head and neck skin cancer.
Papers and articles he has published over many years are numerous, on aspects of maxillofacial surgery and management of related conditions. He has also anlaysed and improved understanding of his specialty, in public and medical domains.
Mr Coombes has served as editor for the facial aesthetics section of The British Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and as a board member reviewer for the journal. He also acts as an expert witness in his field.
His contribution to his profession is exceptional, although making his skills available to patients is equally important to him, where Mr Coombes holistic approach is welcomed.
